Generic Micronase (Glyburide) helps treat the symptoms of type 2 diabetes by making the organs involved in blood sugar production and reuptake more sensitive to the effects of insulin. Insulin is responsible for balancing the levels of glucose in the blood but this balance is disturbed in diabetic patients, leading to an overproduction of blood sugar that doesn't get reabsorbed. Precautions

Do not take Generic Micronase (Glyburide) before discussing your medical history with your doctor. Especially mention:

Any allergies
Metabolic conditions (e.g. diabetic ketoacidosis)
Liver and kidney diseases
Thyroid diseases
Certain hormonal conditions (adrenal or pituitary insufficiency, SIADH-syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone)
Electrolyte imbalance (hyponatremia)
A certain nervous system problem (autonomic neuropathy)

If you suffer or ever have suffered from any of the above, you may not be able to take Generic Micronase (Glyburide) or you may need a dosage adjustment.

Extremely high or low blood sugar levels may cause unwanted side effects, such as blurred vision, dizziness and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you are sure you can perform these activities safely.

Alcohol and Generic Micronase (Glyburide) both lower your blood sugar and if taken together they increase the risk of developing hypoglycemia. In rare cases, a combination of the two can also lead to a serious reaction, with symptoms including:

Facial flushing
Nausea
Vomiting
Dizziness
Stomach pain

When your body is under stress due to the effects of injury, surgery or illness, it is harder to control your glucose levels. If you are experiencing anything like this, you need to inform your doctor, as he may want to implement changes in your medication, treatment plan or glucose testing.

Generic Micronase (Glyburide) makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, tanning booths and sunlamps. If you do have to go out in the sun, wear a strong sunscreen or protective clothing.

Caution is advised for elderly people using this medication as they may be more sensitive to certain side effects of Generic Micronase (Glyburide), such as hypoglycemia.

Generic Micronase (Glyburide) is classed as Pregnancy Category C, which means it may cause harm to an unborn baby. It is not recommended to take this medication when pregnant. Discuss your options with your doctor if you are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant during treatment.

It is not known whether Generic Micronase (Glyburide) passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before taking this medication if you are currently breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

Before taking Generic Micronase (Glyburide), tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medication you are currently using, including:

Bosentan
Other diabetes drugs (e.g. insulin, metformin)
Aspirin or aspirin-like drugs (e.g. salicylates, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, phenylbutazone)
Azole antifungals (e.g. fluconazole)
Birth control pills
Blood thinners (e.g. warfarin)
Calcium channel blockers (e.g. diltiazem)
Chloramphenicol
Clofibrate
Colesevelam
Corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone)
Decongestants (e.g. pseudoephedrine)
Diazoxide
Diet pills
Epinephrine
Estrogens
Isoniazid
MAO inhibitors (e.g. furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine procarbazine, selegiline, rasagiline, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine)
Niacin

The above medication may produce adverse reactions when using in combination with Generic Micronase (Glyburide). Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Beta-blockers such as metoprolol and propranolol and glaucoma eye drops such as timolol may prevent the fast or pounding heartbeat, which is usually a symptom of hypoglycemia. However, other symptoms, such as dizziness, hunger and sweating are unaffected by this type of medication.

Many medicines could affect your blood sugar levels. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new medication to make sure there are no negative interactions with Generic Micronase (Glyburide).

This is only a partial list and other medications may interact negatively. Inform your doctor of all other prescription and non-prescription medication you use, including herbal pills, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals and medication prescribed by other doctors. Do not start or stop using any new medication without talking to your doctor first.

How does Generic Micronase (Glyburide) work?

Insulin is produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar levels. It does this by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and increasing the uptake of glucose by muscle and fat tissues. Diabetes causes a drop in insulin production, which sets a chain reaction in motion - the liver will produce more sugar and less will be removed from the blood by body tissues. Generic Micronase (Glyburide) makes the liver, muscle and fat tissues more sensitive to the effects of natural insulin in the body, making it easier for these organs to perform their natural functions. As a result, blood sugar levels are stabilized once again.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Generic Micronase (Glyburide)?

As both alcohol and Generic Micronase (Glyburide) lower your blood sugar levels, the combination of the two increases the risk of hypoglycemia. In rare cases, a combination of the two can also lead to a serious reaction, with symptoms including:

Facial flushing
Nausea
Vomiting
Dizziness
Stomach pain

It is recommended to limit your alcohol intake while using Generic Micronase (Glyburide) or even avoid alcohol altogether.

Is it safe to take Generic Micronase (Glyburide) when pregnant or breastfeeding?

Can I take Generic Micronase (Glyburide) as a replacement for insulin or other diabetes medication?

Generic Micronase (Glyburide) can be used in combination with other anti-diabetes medication, but it does not function as a replacement for them. Your doctor will decide if you also need additional medication and/ or insulin to adequately treat your diabetes.

What is the recommended dosage of Generic Micronase (Glyburide)?

The usual starting dosage of Generic Micronase (Glyburide) is 2.5-5mg per day.

Patients suffering from kidney or liver problems or adrenal or pituitary insufficiency, should start taking this medication at a lower dose - typically 1.25mg per day.

Your doctor may decide to increase your dosage by 2.5mg or less per week, up to a maximum daily dosage of 20mg.
