How does Fluoxetine work?
The exact mechanism of how antidepressants work is still not entirely clear. Fluoxetine belongs to the family of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). It works against depression and anxiety by blocking the natural reabsorption of a chemical called serotonin in the brain. This increases the amount of serotonin, which has a positive effect on the mood.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Fluoxetine?
Alcohol and Fluoxetine both act upon similar chemicals in the brain. These capsules may intensify the effects of alcohol and in turn alcohol may increase the risk of side effects of this medication. It is recommended to limit your alcohol intake while taking Fluoxetine.
How long does it usually take for Fluoxetine to start working?
It typically takes Fluoxetine about 3-5 weeks to start working, depending on the severity of your condition and symptoms.
Is it safe to use Fluoxetine when pregnant or breastfeeding?
Fluoxetine is classed as Pregnancy Category C, which means it is not sure whether this medication could be harmful to an unborn baby. Discuss the use of this medication with your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during treatment.
